The 34th MFPI Annual Congress will be hosted by Globe Adventure Club and the Ulo ng Apo Mountaineering Club in close coordination with the Zambales tourism board. This multi-day event will showcase the Domorokdok festival and feature some of the best short films from BANFF mountain film world tour.

**Official Opening will be on April 25 but there will be climbs that will start a few days earlier. More details will be released soon.

Everyone is invited to the 2011 MFPI Christmas Party and Monthly Meeting on December 8, 8:30pm at the Cool Stop Resto Bar on Pioneer St., Pioneer Centre, Pasig City.

The Mountaineering Federation of the Phil., (MFPI) Inc., is the umbrella organization of major mountaineering clubs in the Philippines. MFPI have Fifty-Five (55) member organizations representing more than 30,000 mountaineers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is a member organization of the Union Internationale des Association D’ Alpinisme (UIAA) or the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation. UIAA is the world body of mountaineering federations. In addition, MFPI is also a partner organization of the Leave No Trace, Inc. based in Colorado, USA.

The Concerned Aduana Mountaineers of the Phils., Outdoor Addicts Inc. Tiwi Mountaineer and Outdoor Enthusiast and Tribu Guinobateño Mountaineering Club are mountaineering/outdoor and environmental groups duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission that venture in adventure activities and recreation, environmental conservation and protection, and cultural community preservation. Said groups are members of the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc.

The above mentioned entities are working together to uphold the 6th MFPI Luzon Summit with a theme “Pagtiripon Manungod Kan Kapalibutan” (Pagtitipon para sa Kalikasan). This is yearly event when major mountaineering clubs under the MFPI conglomerate. This will be held in Brgy Bagasbas, Daet, Camarines Norte on July 6-10, 2011.

We are opening this event to all. We are expecting an attendance of no less than one hundred (100) participants. Below are the lists of activities for the event:

From the Airport

- Take a commuter van and ask to be dropped to the SDL terminal at the Libertad Public Market. Travel time is 30 minutes. Fare is P 150.00

- Take the first SDL mini bus bound for La Carlota City and get off at the Agora Public Market. Travel time is 1 hour. Fare is P 30.00

- At the Agora Public Market, look for the Guintubdan Jeepney Terminal situated at the front entrance of the Market. Ask to be dropped at the La Carlota Pavillion. Travel time is 30 minutes. Fare is P 30.00

From the Downtown Area

- Take any southbound Jeepney with the SHOPPING-LIBERTAD sign and ask to be dropped at the SDL Terminal. Follow the succeeding steps enumerated above. Jeepney fare is P 7.00.

From the SM City or Robinson’s Mall

- Take any southbound Jeepney with the LIBERTAD sign and ask to be dropped at the UNO-R. Get off in front of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) and ask around for the location of the SDL terminal which is just about 50 meters from the University compound.

From the BREDCO Port.

- Take a tricycle and ask to be dropped at the public plaza.

- At the plaza, take any southbound Jeepney with the SHOPPING-LIBERTAD sign and ask to be dropped at the SDL terminal.

From the Ceres Terminals

NORTH TERMINAL

- Take any southbound SHOPPING-LIBERTAD Jeepney in front of the terminal and ask to be dropped at the SDL Terminal in Libertad

SOUTH TERMINAL

- Take any Jeepney and get off at the Sincere drug store at the Libertad public market. Walk about 100 meters to the SDL terminal.

Take any southbound SHOPPING-LIBERTAD or BANAGO-LIBERTAD Jeepney and ask to dropped at the CERES SOUTH TERMINAL.

From the Robinsons Mall or anywhere else in the City.

- Take any southbound Jeepney with the Libertad sign and get off at the UNO-R campus.

- At the UNO-R, take any SHOPPING-LIBERTAD or BANAGO-LIBERTAD Jeepney and get off at the CERES SOUTH TERMINAL.

MFPI BMC INSTRUCTOR SYLLABUS

SCOPE
This certification is for those persons instructing and organizing The Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) as recognized by the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines (MFPI)
1. SKILL AND EXPERIENCE
1.1 The BMC INSTRUCTOR should have no less than ONE (1) YEAR membership to a Federation affiliated club and at least one year of wilderness experience
1.2 The BMC INSTRUCTOR must have undergone their Basic Mountaineering Course training from a Federation affiliated club or accredited Instructor
1.3 The BMC INSTRUCTOR must hold a current FIRST AID CERTIFICATE issued within the last two years
The BMC Instructor is expected to be proficient in the following
2. ENVIRONMENT
2.1 The BMC INSTRUCTOR should be proficient in the LEAVE NO TRACE principle
2.2 Demonstrate an ability to impart knowledge to students on the flora, fauna, geology and history of a given area
2.3 Understand the significance of areas to local indigenous people and demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to their culture
2.4 Describe the major organizations involved in the use wilderness areas
3. CLIMB PREPARATION
3.1 Demonstrate the importance of physical fitness and preparedness towards the activity
3.2 Produce an overall plan and an emergency plan for a given trip
3.3 Identify aims, objectives and define purpose of a given trip
3.4 Identify and organize the structure of group on a given activity
3.5 EQUIPMENT
3.5.1 Demonstrate knowledge of the various equipment used commonly in the outdoors. This includes the type, characteristics, limitations, cost, care, maintenance and storage of these equipments.
3.5.2 Demonstrate the proper use and care of personal equipment and the appropriate gears for different types of activities
3.5.3 Demonstrate the usage and purpose of equipment that are meant for the whole group during an activity
3.6 Describe the weather pattern in a given area and obtaining weather information for a given trip
4. CLIMB MANAGEMENT
4.1 Demonstrate knowledge in appropriate trekking skills and movement within the wilderness area
4.2 Select an appropriate route and identification of its risks and hazards
4.3 Demonstrate knowledge on trail regulations in a given area
4.4 Selection of campsites and identifying natural hazards
4.5 Demonstrate the advantage/disadvantage of different camp shelters. Show the proper use and maintenance of such shelters
4.6 Describe the organization required for group cooking. Lighting an emergency fire in case of adverse conditions and showing fire safety methods
4.7 Describe proper methods of handling/preparation of food plus fuel requirements for a given trip
4.8 Describe toilet regime for a given wilderness area
5. WILDERNESS SKILLS
5.1 NAVIGATION
5.1.1 Demonstrate knowledge in the use of map and compass
5.1.2 Describe route and estimation of distance for a given trip
5.1.3 Determine present position on a given map and locate a specified point on the map
5.1.4 Navigate across a terrain using a map
5.1.5 Travel to a location using a compass

7.1 Demonstrate knowledge in the importance of the climbing rope and various types of climbing ropes
7.2 Show the appropriate use for each type of climbing rope and the proper care/maintenances and storage for them
7.3 Demonstrate knowledge in the various types of knots and the proper use for each type ( square, fisherman, double fisherman, sheet bend, clove hitch, two-half hitch, taut line, timber hitch, bowline, figure-or-eight are the minimum)
8. WATER SAFETY
8.1 Describe when and when not to cross a river
8.2 Demonstrate techniques used in crossing a waterway, for an individual and a group in various numbers
8.3 Identify hazards, methods and best areas in crossing a waterway
8.4 Demonstrate proper emergency procedures and recovery method for a given waterway
9. INSTRUCTOINAL TECHNIQUES
9.1 Prepare a lesson plan and deliver the BMC to a given audience
